Record Setting Season in 2026
What a season.
Over the past 10 weeks, hundreds of young athletes across Nova Scotia played, competed, learned, laughed, made new friends, and helped make this one of the most exciting seasons in the history of Nova Scotia Minor Ball Hockey.
The season wrapped up with a full week of championship events, beginning with Championship Night in Kentville, continuing with Championship Night in Truro, and finishing with two full days of action in HRM at LeBrun Arena. From start to finish, it was busy, loud, competitive, fun, and full of the kind of energy that reminds us why this league exists.
This spring, more minor ball hockey was played across Nova Scotia than ever before.
From Nine Kids to Hundreds of Families
Nova Scotia Minor Ball Hockey started seven years ago with a simple idea.
A couple of hockey dads wanted to get their kids out of the basement, off their phones, and outside playing the game they had grown up playing every day: ball hockey.
That first game at Gorsebrook Park in Halifax had just nine players.
Week after week, more kids came. Families invited friends. Momentum started to build, and we realized there was an opportunity to create something special.
Today, more than 600 young athletes and over 120 volunteer coaches participate in our programs across Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, Sackville, East Hants, Kentville, and Truro. What began with nine players has grown into what we believe is the largest youth ball hockey program in Atlantic Canada.
We built this one game at a time.
One player at a time.
And now, one community at a time.
What We Are Really Building
The growth of the league is exciting, but the numbers are not what matter most.
What makes us proudest is not the number of players we have added. It is the number of kids we have helped get active, make new friends, and discover a love of sport.
For many children, Nova Scotia Minor Ball Hockey is their very first organized sport. For others, it is a fun and affordable way to be active with friends. For many families, it is also an introduction to hockey itself before entering the ice game.
We have watched countless players begin their journey with us before moving on to minor ice hockey, while many others continue playing both sports and use ball hockey to develop skills that transfer directly to the game on ice.
At its core, our league is about giving kids a place to play, belong, compete, and build confidence.
A Community Effort
None of this happens without the people behind the scenes.
More than 120 volunteer coaches stepped forward this season to support teams, encourage players, organize benches, and help create a positive experience for kids. Our coaches are the true backbone of the program, and we are grateful for every person who gave their time.
We are also proud of the youth leadership opportunities created through the league. This season, we hired eight young people, many of them high school and university students, to help deliver game-day operations, referee games, support coaches, organize equipment, manage schedules, and help create a safe and positive environment for players.
Nova Scotia Minor Ball Hockey also continues to work closely with recreation partners and community facilities. In HRM, we rent municipal recreation facilities at full cost, including outdoor courts and indoor facilities such as Gorsebrook Park and LeBrun Arena. We believe community sport works best when families, volunteers, recreation departments, facilities, and local leaders all play a part.
Removing Barriers
We have always believed that every child who wants to play should have the opportunity to play.
Over the years, we have quietly helped families facing financial challenges so that cost would not stand in the way of participation. Today, we are proud to offer free registration in all Nova Scotia Minor Ball Hockey programs for children currently in foster care.
This is one more way we are working to ensure every child has the opportunity to experience the friendships, confidence, and lifelong memories that sport can provide.
A New Championship Tradition
This spring also marked the first time our divisional champions had the opportunity to lift the new NSMBHL Championship Trophy.
Judging by the smiles, cheers, family photos, raised arms, happy kids, and a few proud trophy kisses, the trophy was everything we hoped it would be. It added energy, excitement, and a little extra magic to Championship Week.
We hope it becomes a tradition our players look forward to for years to come.
While Championship Week celebrated our champions, it was really a celebration of every player who played, every family that supported them, every coach who volunteered, and every community that welcomed us.
Fall Registration Is Now Open
From nine kids at Gorsebrook Park to hundreds of families across Nova Scotia, we have come a long way together, and we cannot wait to see what the next chapter brings.
Thank you to every player, parent, coach, volunteer, recreation partner, youth staff leader, grandparent, and supporter who helped make this season so memorable.
Registration for our Fall Ball Hockey Season is now open online.
We are excited to keep the momentum going and provide another opportunity for kids to get active, play with friends, and enjoy the game.
We hope to see you back at the rink this fall.
